01

Overview

FaaTools is a collection of everyday utilities — PDF, image, text, developer and calculator tools — designed around one principle: files should stay on the user's device whenever possible. There is no account system, no database and no server-side file storage.

02

Objective

Build a fast, private tools platform that can grow from a handful of tools to more than a hundred without each new tool needing its own layout, SEO setup or navigation work.

03

My role

Product owner, designer and developer (AI-assisted development)

04

Approach

  • Defined every tool as structured metadata in a central registry — name, category, keywords, processing type, privacy notes, SEO and related tools.
  • Served every tool and category from a single dynamic route, so breadcrumbs, metadata and related links are generated consistently.
  • Loaded each tool's workspace only on its own page to keep the shared JavaScript small.
  • Automated quality checks and deployment with GitHub Actions: lint, type-check and build on GitHub, then a staged upload to shared hosting with automatic rollback.

05

Work completed

  • Information architecture and tool registry design
  • Interface design and reusable tool workspace components
  • In-browser PDF processing including compression, conversion to images, editing and password protection
  • Technical SEO: canonical URLs, Open Graph, sitemap and robots generation
  • Production deployment pipeline to Namecheap shared hosting with health checks

06

Built vs. planned

Implemented

  • Live production site at faatools.com with 39 tools
  • Browser-side processing for PDF, image and text tools
  • Central tool registry driving routes, navigation and metadata
  • Automated build-and-deploy workflow with rollback

07

Tools & technologies

  • Next.js (App Router)
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • pdf-lib
  • pdf.js
  • GitHub Actions
  • Namecheap cPanel / Passenger

08

Outcomes

  • Running in production at faatools.com on Namecheap shared hosting.

09

Lessons learned

  • On LiteSpeed/Passenger hosting, the platform supplies the listening socket — the Node server has to detect that environment instead of assuming a PORT.
  • Building in CI and shipping only runtime artifacts keeps shared-hosting resource limits out of the build process.
  • A metadata registry is what makes a large tools catalogue maintainable: one entry produces the page, the SEO and the internal links.
